The short answer
For routine calls such as opening hours, prices, directions and booking, an AI receptionist can take over, and it answers at night and on weekends. For delicate, emotional or complex calls, a person is still better.
The practical setup is both: the AI answers everything, books what it can, and passes urgent or sensitive calls to a human with a short summary.
“Let the AI take the routine calls and keep people for the ones that matter.”
What an AI receptionist does well
It picks up every call, never has a bad day, speaks more than one language and writes up each call. It also costs a flat monthly fee instead of a salary or a per-call bill.
Where a person is still better
Complaints, bad news, negotiation and anything that needs judgement or empathy. Surveys also suggest many people prefer to talk to a person, so always give callers a way to reach one.
Rules to know
In the EU the AI Act requires telling callers they are talking to an AI. In Spain, Law 10/2025 on customer service applies to basic services and to companies with 250 or more employees and requires human attention to be available, so it does not apply to most small businesses but shows where the rules are heading.
How to start
Forward your calls to the AI only when you cannot answer, listen to a week of summaries, and adjust. Remute has a free plan with 5 minutes a month to hear it in your browser first.
